Marketing and Sales folks are the one who are most affected by the dilema of usability and technology. Its a far from truth that are product available in the market which is tech savvy and usable or intuitive to use. Though technology is touching heights but with this there is now a strong emphasis on the usability perspective which was long forgotten or geeks never thought it is important.

Now geeks have just woken up and emphasis on the usability is getting its due respect. Its late than never. We shoud not blame the geeks as if they were not there then complex problem wouldn’t have got their simple solution. I think its more of question of evolution. As the time progress the emphasis from technology has now shifting towards usablity. Technology is lot to add to this paradigm shift as without the metaphor of the so called XXXX 2.0 technology we would be living in the Tim Berner Lee world of world wide web.

One of such small problem that marketing/sales professional faces is the constant need to move the contacts they have touched during their last campaign to the email client such as Microsoft Outlook. Though there are tools which takes care of email campaign but SalMark(Sales/Marketing) professionals belonging to small and mid size organisation still would like to use their Microsoft Outlook to start their email campaign.

If you do a google and now Bing, you will get many relevant products to solve the issue of converting the contacts in the Excel file to Microsoft outlook contacts. What you need to look before buying the product is the following

  • Does the product supports excel format of 2000/2003 & 2007?
  • Does product provides the capability of mapping excel fields to Outlook contact schema?
  • Does the product takes of deduplication?
  • Does the product takes care of Null Email?
  • Does the product takes care of Distribution List?
  • Does the product allows you to import directly into the MS Outlook contacts?
  • Does the UI provided is intuitive?
  • Is the UI similar to wizard based?
  • Can you use the product without a help manual?

You should evaluate the product on the above criteria and then make a wise decision. Though technology has reached to a great extent but if it doesn’t solve the problem in an intuitive manner then its waste of a technology.
