A possible scenario with SQL Database is

At startup, SQL Server tries to get a lock on the device file. If the device is used by some other process (say for example – the backup software) or if the file is missing, you might encounter this problem that your SQL database is in “Suspect Mode.”

This can be a grave problem putting your crucial data at stake. To prevent such severe SQL data loss, there is a process that you can try yourself.

Follow the following steps:

  1. Ensure that the device file is available.
  2. Use supplemental stored procedure sp_resetstatus to reset the status of a suspect database.
  3. Run sp_resetstatus in the master database for the suspect SQL database
    • use master
      go
      exec sp_resetstatus <Database_name>
  4. Stop and start SQL Server again.
  5. Confirm that the database was recovered and is available.
  6. Run DBCC NEWALLOC, DBCC TEXTALL and DBCC CHECKDB.

One of the cool feature of Microsoft Outlook 2007 is categorizing the emails without the need of creating multiple hierarchical folder structure is to use “Search Folders”. Search Folders provides the following

  • Apply Filters on the emails.
  • Provides view based on the filter without creating filter.
  • Three pre-defined Search folders are by default
    • Follow up
    • Unread Mails
    • Large Mails

Configuring the Search folder is one of the easy task. Like all Microsoft tools this also provides a intuitive way to configure new search folders.

SysTools Export Notes was used by an enterprise and it proved really helpful for them by making the Lotus Notes NSF to Microsoft Outlook PST migration process easier, which otherwise had been quite tough.

The Search for an Alternative Messaging Platform

An organization, that had been using Lotus Notes for its email and messaging needs for more than a decade,  decided to look for an alternative messaging platform for the following reasons:

  • There was a need for better performance and security
  • Cost of Lotus Notes licenses was quite high
  • The high cost of maintenance of the existing Lotus Notes infrastructure was pushing up their operating costs

Some of the characteristics of their existing messaging platform were as follows:

  • The existing enterprise messaging system was huge and had more than 700 mailboxes
  • The average size of each mailbox was around 1.5GB
  • The average volume of emails exchanged during a month was around 500K
  • The total size of data to be migrated was over 1200 GB

The IT team decided to migrate to Microsoft Outlook that offered almost identical features at cheaper licenses and the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) was lower than that of Lotus Notes.

The Search for an Efficient Email Migration  Product

The IT team was then faced with daunting task of looking for product that can facilitate the migration of mailboxes from the existing platform to the new one. The IT team first explored the option of developing an email migration product in-house. But after conducting a feasibility study, it was decided that it would be better to opt for a third party product for the job.

Once the decision to use a third party product was taken, all the popular products available in the market were considered and evaluated. Given that there were a large number of mailboxes that had to be migrated, it was essential that the selected product is easy to deploy and simple to use. Apart from offering almost all features provided by other vendor, SysTools Export Notes is the only product that is easy to deploy and use with minimal technical support.

The aspect of  message fidelity in terms of  preserving the HTML format of email was one concern  as SysTools Export Notes doesn’t support this feature. The IT team then concluded that if the message fidelity in terms of HTML formatting of emails need to be  maintained then it will increase the overall time of migration which in turn increases the cost of the migration project. Thus it was decided to go ahead with SysTools Export Notes for NSF to Outlook migration. One of the reason was as these were old emails even if the HTML formatting are lost it will not be loss of data so message fidelity is still intact.

Successful Notes to PST Migration with SysTools Export Notes

SysTools Export Notes,  was deployed on the machines of each individual user.  They could then migrate their own mailboxes without assistance from the technical team. Each user had to follow the following simple steps to convert .nsf files to .pst files:

  1. Install the Microsoft Outlook version to which they migrated without removing the Lotus Notes client.
  2. Configured a POP3 account on Outlook
  3. Ensure that Lotus Notes is not connected to the Domino server
  4. Migrate mailboxes using Export Notes

The entire Lotus Notes to Outlook migration process was completed in just around 3 weeks. Minor hitches in special cases were swiftly resolved by the SysTools Support.

Overall, SysTools Export Notes successfully helped the organization achieve its objective of moving to a more efficient messaging platform (i.e. from Lotus Notes to MS Outlook) in keeping with its claim that anyone can use their product without technical help.

Lost & Found Story of NTBackup on Vista October 5, 2009

Microsoft Windows is undoubtedly a great Operating System (OS). Great in understanding, great in comprehending, great in using and last but not the least great in protecting users’ data. It gives its users a backup utility tool which is in-built in Windows Operating System versions: 98, 2000, XP and 2003. This is in fact the best way to backup computer files.

But, a problem arises when a user upgrades his system from any of the Windows versions (98, 2000, XP and 2003) to Windows Vista. As Vista does not support the NTBackup tool, so all the backup files on computer (the files that have .bkf extension and so are called BKF files also) stored earlier in the backup utility (NTBackup) become orphaned. They are termed orphaned because they become devoid of their existing place and after upgradation to Vista, they don’t have any specific location. Backup data files are highly important for any user and no one can lose it at any cost.

Fortunately in such a situation we don’t need to panic and curse Microsoft but use a third party software utility product that can

  • Read the orphaned BKF files.
  • Extract the content of the bkf file and display the data in the explorer view.
  • Allow to Save them to a proper location.

SysTools BKF Repair is a simple and intuitive windows backup repair product that can be used to RETRIEVE and RESTORE the backup data. If you want to retrieve/recover/retain and regain your backup files computer data, then this SysTools software tool will act as a BKF reader for you and will extract all the backup files that you had originally saved in the NTBackup before the upgradation of your OS to Windows Vista.

SysTools BKF Repair Tool have the following features

  • Ability to extract small to huge windows backup BKF files quickly.
  • Display data in a Windows Explorer view, which makes it easy for an end user to validate the backup data properly.
  • Search with blazing speed on filenames.
  • View the Preview of selected files such as images, text etc-etc.
  • Extract selected folders/files and save them on disk.
  • While extracting attributes such as Created/Modified dates are maintained.
  • Ability to extract and save the data to the location from where it was backed up.
